A Practical Consideration for the Functions of the Soul
Consider for a moment that what’s true is we are body, mind, and soul. The body and mind part we all understand, and is a no-brainer of sorts. But the soul or Other has been mostly relegated to religion or some warm, fuzzy, new-age idea. When we get down to it, though, and begin looking at our life experiences, those moments in time that have no logical explanation, or even in those moments when we are moved by the works of a musician or artist, whether we admit it or not, there is something at work beyond that grey matter between our ears.
To understand how we function as a human being: body, mind, and soul, is a practical consideration that can serve us in everything we endeavor to do. What you’ll read in this particular blog are the first three concepts or Functions out of a total of seven. This is a language I developed over my lifetime to bring together these concepts that have existed since the beginning of time, creating a framework that can be used to observe the soul in action. Here is an ever-so-brief description of the first three Functions.
Some folks can find the Functions a bit confusing at first. To say it simply, the Functions are how the soul, or the Other, expresses through the body. Another way to say it would be that they represent the things the soul, or the Other, does. It is sometimes hard to see the activity of the Other, and it sometimes requires a little time to recognize the Other’s actions.
The first of the Functions is the Be One Function. It is the easiest to observe and the easiest to incorporate into the thinking. Basically, the Be One Function is the integration of body, mind, and soul. We learn how to integrate all three through programming. If we can assume that one reason the body has life is that it is filled or energized with the soul, or the Other, that would indicate that at birth, we begin observing this world through the eyes of the Other. As we grow older, the demands of surviving in the world cause us to also observe this world through the eyes of the body.
The Be One Function is the Other acting to bring us back to observing the world through the eyes of the Other, while at the same time observing the world through the eyes of the body. Usually, we have to rewrite certain programs we learned during our transition from baby to adult in order for that integration to take place. That’s why we learn Be One Function through programming.
Harmony Function is the second of the Functions. It stands to reason that if we can integrate ourselves so that we can also observe the world through the eyes of the Other, then we should also be able to observe other people as they express the Other through their bodies. In a way, Harmony Function is an extension of the Be One Function as it applies to other people. It should be no surprise, then, that the way we learn Harmony Function is through adopting other points of view. Of course, that would mean that we couldn’t live life as though the world revolved around each of us, and would also indicate that we would have to include every person as a part of our Be One Function.
Do Function is the third of the Functions. It is learned through communication. Communication is an action, but in this sense, it is a communication from the Other in one person to the Other in another person. To say that it is an action between two people would be accurate, but terribly limited. The expression of the Other through the body can be a profound experience. Each person expresses the Other in a manner which is unique to that person, but can be understood through the difference that person makes to others. The way that person expresses that difference in the world will always define the nature of their Specific Function.
The first three Functions of the Other form a kind of unit. To integrate Be One, Harmony, and Do Functions in a life is certainly an achievement. There is still much more that can be achieved. In future blogs, we’ll explore those other achievements.
