Welcome to my daily political musings. Grab a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy!
The vice presidential nominee has one job, and that’s to deliver the hard-nose messaging for the candidate. This year's vice presidential crop is a study in contrasts. The protagonists are Coach Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, and JD Vance, a Senator from Ohio. On paper, these two look pretty evenly matched. But like my dear old mother said, “Paper will lie still for anything.”
Coach Walz is a pretty likable guy. He really does come off as the guy on the block everyone calls to find out how to do anything that needs done around their house. JD is not as likable. JD pontificates about a lot of stuff he doesn’t really know about but says it anyway because his Republican Betters like it when he sings so prettily. He gets to bat his lovely eyes, you know.
For all his likability and even kindness, Coach plays for keeps. When Coach talks about issues, he just makes sense. JD seems to have trouble processing common sense. Common sense has no place in pontification, apparently. Coach wants kids to eat so they can study. JD wants women to incubate children by the bushelful. But he doesn’t want to take care of them. He wants to put them to work.
JD says some strange things about what he thinks women may and may not do. He also thinks that government should attend to the feminine condition and monitor menstrual cycles and pregnancies. He doesn’t want government to regulate business, just women. Coach wants government to Mind Its Own Damned Business. Coach wants women to decide for themselves whether or not to have children or cats. He also thinks JD is Weird.
I think Coach is right.
